We are a women’s clinic dedicated to providing care for mothers facing unplanned or unexpectedly complicated pregnancies. Our goal is to empower women with the information they need to make life-affirming choices regarding their pregnancies. However, it’s important to remember that pregnancy involves both a woman and a man—a mother and a father.
Dads matter. In previous writings, I have emphasized the significance of a father’s role in helping a mother choose life for her baby. Passive phrases like “it’s her choice” can be less empowering than actively supporting her and helping her feel secure as she embarks on her journey into motherhood. But what about the dads? How can we empower them?
The importance of an engaged father cannot be overstated. Dads have a significant impact on the social development of their children. Statistics show that a healthy relationship with their father contributes to a child’s success and reduces the likelihood of encountering difficulties in adulthood. Therefore, supporting healthy fathers is crucial. It’s essential that dads are seen and heard while preparing for the arrival of their baby.
The Hope House has recently launched the “Father for Life” program, which focuses on equipping dads for fatherhood. The program begins with a conversation about how these fathers feel about becoming dads and their relationships with the mothers of their children. Our advocates provide follow-up support, encouragement, and opportunities for dads to connect with other men. Ultimately, it’s up to each dad to decide whether to apply what they learn, but simply being there is already a significant step.
Many of the dads we encounter do not have fathers who were actively engaged in their lives, leaving them unprepared for their own roles as parents. By creating a peaceful environment where they feel heard and valued—without the pressure of feeling like just another number—we can foster a genuine connection with these dads. Once trust is established, they are more likely to open up about their thoughts, fears, and future goals. This is an important step in strengthening fathers, which in turn strengthens families and, ultimately, our community.
Since launching the program in December 2024, we have been fortunate to meet with six dads. We look forward to expanding “Father for Life” in 2025, providing a safe space for dads to feel empowered and equipped to support mothers and children. We kindly ask for your prayers for these dads and for the future of the families we serve.
