Don’t Drink the Water

Sex is a controversial topic that often sparks heated discussions about bodily autonomy and personal beliefs. While it’s a fundamental aspect of human nature, it can also lead to negative consequences when it’s not approached responsibly. Specifically, when sex occurs outside the confines of a committed lifelong marriage, it can lead to a variety of problems in society.

To illustrate this point, imagine a pristine stream that provides clean water to a community while supporting a healthy ecosystem. The stream is lined with trees that provide shade, oxygen, and food for wildlife. It’s a beautiful and beneficial environment for everyone who lives around it.

Now, imagine that a factory is built upstream from the stream, and it starts dumping waste into the water. This pollution clouds the water and harms the aquatic life that once thrived there. The trees along the banks start to wither and die, no longer able to sustain the life that depended on them.

As the factory workers build homes closer to work, neighborhoods start to develop near the stream. The waste from their homes and fertilizers starts to pollute the water too, along with the trash that people leave behind. The stream becomes an unhealthy and unpleasant place to be.

Eventually, an environmental organization started to clean up the stream, organizing events to pick up litter and planting new trees. While their efforts make the stream look cleaner, the ecosystem doesn’t fully recover until the factory upstream stops dumping pollutants.

In Colquitt County, the rate of teenage pregnancy is one of the highest in Georgia, with over 40 out of 1000 births belonging to teen mothers. However, the community has made significant progress since the 1990s, when the rate was over 80 per 1000. The community has implemented a curriculum called “Choosing the Best” in schools, which focuses on sexual responsibility, and holds an event called “Teen Maze” to show students the consequences of risky behavior.

While progress has been made toward addressing the issues of teen pregnancy, domestic violence, drug use, and other negative outcomes, there is still much work to be done. It is essential for our community to come together and equip the next generation with the tools and knowledge they need to succeed and avoid these pitfalls. By doing so, we can ensure a healthier and happier future for everyone.
